Democrats Suddenly Want Out of Trump / Russia Probe Because…
Democratic lawmakers are now saying they may pull support of a Congressional investigation into Russian meddling in the November election.
Citing the risk that any investigation could be “mired in politics,” they said they would walk if it isn’t comprehensive and in-depth and not purely partisan.
“I’m not going to be part of a dog-and-pony show that is not a serious effort to do an investigation, because this is really serious,” Rep. Jackie Speier, D-Calif., told the New York Times in a report published Saturday. “If it’s not a legitimate and comprehensive and in-depth investigation, why would we be party to it?”
She said that all nine Democrats on the committee would pull their support “under certain circumstances.”
They have also openly questioned whether the committee’s chairman, Republican Rep. Devin Nunes, would be fair or undercut Russia’s connection to the election. So far, however, Democrats say Nunes has been responsive.
“Most of us would agree that there’s no way we’re participating in any form of cover-up or whitewash, so we will walk away if the moment requires,” said Representative Jim Himes, Democrat of Connecticut. “But we’re certainly not there yet.”
Is it possible that Democrats are simply nervous that any truly fair investigation would uncover more collaboration? That if things get too sticky that they’ll pull out of the investigation and claim it wasn’t “legitimate” or “comprehensive”?
“As if previewing their complaints, Rep. Adam B. Schiff of California, the committee’s top Democrat, said it was unclear whether the panel could conduct a credible investigation, ideally resulting in a single, bipartisan report on its findings. Along with Mr. Nunes, Mr. Schiff is among the so-called Gang of Eight congressional leaders who receive classified intelligence briefings.
“If we get to the point at any time where I feel we can’t do that, where there are legitimate lines of investigation that are being walled off, then I will say so,” Mr. Schiff told reporters this week.
