BREAKING: Sen. John McCain Has Brain Cancer

The Mayo Clinic said on Wednesday that it discovered a tumor behind Sen. John McCain’s (R-Ariz.) eye when he underwent surgery to remove a blood clot.

Mayo completely removed the tumor tissue, according to a statement from the clinic, and McCain, 80, is in “excellent” health. “The Senator’s doctors say he is recovering from his surgery ‘amazingly well’ and his underlying health is excellent,” the statement read.

The clinic’s statement, which McCain’s family requested, noted the senator’s appreciation for the support he’s received. “He is grateful to the doctors and staff at Mayo Clinic for their outstanding care, and is confident that any future treatment will be effective,” the statement read.

McCain’s daughter, Meghan, released a statement about her father as well:

Lab results from McCain’s Friday surgery uncovered the tumor, termed a “glioblastoma.” According to CNN, McCain went to the Mayo clinic in Phoenix on Friday, when he didn’t feel mentally as sharp as usual. McCain had a CT scan and MRI, neither of which apparently revealed the tumor.
