Protesters Tear Down Confederate Monument in NC, Proceed to Curse Out and Beat the Statue

Protesters tore down a Confederate monument in downtown Durham, North Carolina on Monday.

After using a ladder to tie a rope around the statue of a Confederate soldier, the protesters toppled it and proceeded to curse it out. They also kicked and hit the statute, while one man appeared to spit on it.

 

It’s unclear where police were during the protest. There appeared to be no real police presence during the demonstration.

One of the organizers of the protest, Loan Tran, told WNCN-TV that all the Confederate monuments in Durham and across the country need to be “removed.”

“When I see a Confederate statue in downtown Durham, or really anywhere, it fills me with a lot of rage and frustration,” she added.

The monument-destroying protest comes days after white supremacists staged violent demonstrations in Charlottesville, Virginia.

Three people were left dead following the protest. Charlottesville resident Heather Heyer, 32, was killed when a car plowed into a group of counter-protesters. Virginia State Police officers H. Jay Cullen and Berke M.M. Bates died in a helicopter crash on their way to assist law enforcement amid the chaos in Charlottesville.
