President Trump and Melania paid a special visit and brought flowers to House Majority Whip Steve Scalise (R. La.) Wednesday evening.
Rep. Scalise is in critical condition in a hospital after being shot practicing for the annual Congressional baseball game.
The shooter has been identified as James Hodgkinson, a 66-year old former volunteer for Sen. Bernie Sander’s presidential campaign. Hodgkinson allegedly has been extremely critical of President Trump in the past.
He also reportedly asked the congressmen if they were ‘Republicans or Democrats’ before opening fire. He was shot and killed during the attack.
Rep. Scalise was sent to MedStar Washington Hospital Center for surgery for a gunshot wound to the hip. MedStar documented his wounds, saying:
“The bullet traveled across his pelvis, fracturing bones, injuring internal organs, and causing severe bleeding.”
“He underwent immediate surgery, and an additional procedure to stop bleeding…His condition is critical, and he will require additional operations.”
President Trump gave a heartfelt message after he and Melania left the hospital, saying:
Just left hospital. Rep. Steve Scalise, one of the truly great people, is in very tough shape – but he is a real fighter. Pray for Steve!

The President also visited and brought flowers to Crystal Griner, a US Capitol Police Officer, who was also injured in the attack, but not as seriously.
