Four Major Journalistic Retractions From CNN This Month

Three CNN employees have resigned over a retracted story regarding President Donald Trump’s alleged connections to Russia, the network announced Monday.

Note: This article contains coarse language that may offend some readers.

In the infancy of his administration, President Donald Trump branded CNN as “fake news” and “very fake news.” The network, clearly bothered by the assertion, has pushed back on the moniker.

However, in the month of June, CNN has been forced to delete, correct, or remove four pieces of content from their news site or social handles.

Exhibit A: Comey expected to claim that Trump is under investigation. Wait, no he will not.

CNN was forced to correct a claim by an unnamed source that James Comey will deny ever telling Trump he was not under investigation. In the story, originally titled “Comey expected to refute Trump,” the source’s claim was proven untrue by Comey’s written testimony.

According to the Daily Mail:

Comey is going to dispute the president on this point if he’s asked about it by senators. He will say he never assured Donald Trump that he was not under investigation,’ Gloria Borger, CNN’s chief political analyst, said on-air.

They had to issue a correction after Comey released his prepared opening statement ahead of his testimony.

CORRECTION AND UPDATE: This article was published before Comey released his prepared opening statement. The article and headline have been corrected to reflect that Comey does not directly dispute that Trump was told multiple times he was not under investigation in his prepared testimony released after this story was published.

Exhibit B: Trump did not visit a wounded Steve Scalise in the hospital. No, wait…

Reporting facts in real-time is hard. However, when Trump visited MedStar Washington Hospital Center to meet with victims of the Congressional Baseball Game shooting, CNN’s Senior White House Correspondent Jim Acosta had to correct a big detail. Acosta originally reported that a White House official told him that Trump did not meet with critically wounded Congressman Steve Scalise.

Acosta had to correct the report after it was revealed that Trump did visit Scalise. Acosta then blamed the mistake on the White House pool report.

Again, tough break.

Exhibit C: Only Democrats prayed before the Congressional Baseball Game.

The Congressional Baseball Game went on in the aftermath of the horrific shooting and targeting of GOP baseball team members by left-wing radical, James T. Hodgkinson. The game was a moment for all to come together in support of the wounded and brave men and women who risked their lives for each other. However, before the game, CNN reported that Democrats had taken the field to pray.

There’s just one problem with that. Here are all the Republicans praying with them:

CNN eventually deleted the tweet and issued a correction.

Exhibit D: Full retraction and deletion of an anonymous story about Trump-Russia collusion.

The news network was forced to remove an entire story about a single source accusing Trump transition team members of being associated with Russian banking interests. The story, which was described as a “massive, massive f**k up” by an anonymous source has led to an internal review of all Russia-related reporting.

According to the Daily Mail:

CNN has deleted a story from its website that claimed there were possible ties between Russia and an associate of Donald Trump – just weeks after the network had to back down on a separate report about fired FBI director James Comey.

The network issued a retraction after deleting the Russian ties story from its website and all social media accounts late on Friday night.

They published the claims on Thursday and cited one anonymous source.

The source had claimed congressional investigators were looking at a ‘$10-billion Russian investment fund whose chief executive met with a member of President Donald Trump’s transition team four days before Trump’s inauguration.’

There has not been a full review released yet of why the story was published and subsequently deleted.

All in all, a tough month for CNN. Perhaps more of this?
