A self-described core organizer of Black Lives Matter Louisville outlined an extreme set of reparation demands last week, calling on white people who don’t have any descendants to will their property to a “black or brown family,” among other things.
The article for Leo Weekly titled “White people, here are 10 requests from a Black Lives Matter leader” was written by Chanelle Helm, who promotes reparations for minorities with hashtags such as #RunUsOurLand and #RunUsOurMoney.
Helms claimed that those inheriting property should sell it to minority families because, as she says, “You’re bound to make that money in some other white privileged way.”
She also claimed that people who ignore racism are complicit in it:
White people, especially white women (because this is yaw specialty — Nosey Jenny and Meddling Kathy), get a racist fired. Yaw know what the f**k they be saying. You are complicit when you ignore them. Get your boss fired cause they racist too.
Helms also called on housing developers to allow minorities to live for free:
If you are a developer or realty owner of multi-family housing, build a sustainable complex in a black or brown blighted neighborhood and let black and brown people live in it for free.
She also urged white people to “give up the home you own to a black or brown family” if they can afford to downsize.
The concept of reparations has gained momentum of late. The Movement for Black Lives, for instance, lists a myriad of target areas, including college tuition, living expenses, and even the revamping of educational curricula from a top-down level.
Since 1989, Rep. John Conyers (D-MI) has repeatedly introduced a bill creating a commission to study the effects of slavery and appropriate remedies for it.
These efforts are largely backed by a 2016 UN study, which found that the “racial terrorism” of the past warranted reparations for black people.
