Steve Scalise Suggests He’ll Be on the Sandlot Again After Attempted Political Assassination
It’s been three months since Republican House Majority Whip Steve Scalise and other Republicans were intentionally targeted by a gunman during a team practice for the Congressional Baseball Game.
The shooter, James Hodgkinson, was an angry Bernie Sanders supporter, the Daily Mail reported.
Another victim that day was Tyson Foods lobbyist Matt Mika, who was critically injured.
He told ABC’s “Good Morning America” he’s still in physical therapy and that “it’s awesome I’m alive.”
He said it would have been a “massacre” if the Capitol Police detail with Congressman Scalise hadn’t been there.
Mika swore he’d be back out there on the baseball diamond next year:
- “This is supposed to be a safe haven … This is where people come to have fun. You’re not supposed to have any violence or guns or shooting. So we have to be better than that.”
Scalise saw the story and tweeted a message to Mika:
Thank you Matt Mika for sharing your story – glad to see you’re doing well. Can’t wait to see you on the ball field again! pic.twitter.com/opy7LPZX7z
— Rep. Steve Scalise (@SteveScalise) September 4, 2017
And the end of the tweet might have been a tell for Scalise’s own baseball future:
- “Can’t wait to see you on the ball field again!”
That’s the way “KaeDalious” read it, too:
Hope ur recovering well & don’t suffer chronic pain & trauma. It’s inspiring u & Mike will continue to play ball. Help @POTUS if u can. 🙏

Scalise is busy trying to recover so he can return to work, though Congress doesn’t seem to be too far from his thoughts:
The House just passed 12 funding bills, putting American taxpayers’ priorities first & reining in abusive DC bureaucrats. pic.twitter.com/Wk2YQBsaHK

The Washington Free Beacon reports the congressman is expected to return to Congress sometime in September.
Scalise is trying to stay upbeat while he’s in intensive inpatient rehabilitation, and he missed out on the opportunity to go to a U2 concert in which Bono had mentioned him:
Big thanks to @U2 for the prayers. Wish I could have been there last night. Tell Bono I still look forward to a round of Guinness – on me! https://t.co/oP2JVCsjB7

The ABC News story, which Scalise tweeted, notably airbrushes out the politically partisan nature of the attempted mass assassinations.
The Daily Mail reported Hodgkinson was an angry Sanders supporter who visited the Independent Vermont Senator’s office and worked on his state campaign. That information was left out of the story. The fact that every single one of Hodgkinson’s targets were — intentionally — Republicans didn’t make into the story, either.
Hodgkinson was killed when Capitol Police returned fire.
